Eye witnesses told the Independentpost. One of the eye witnesses, Elijah Kangwa said as soon as she was spotted by the call boys, the girl was swarmed and was harassed in all manner of ways before she had her mini-skirt removed forcefully. Kangwa added that when the girl was stripped almost naked, she was then dragged to the main bus station where she was pushed in between some packed buses. There, the call boys were just about to start gang raping her before some good Samaritans came to her rescue.
The crying girl was then given a Chitenge material by one of the women and whisked away. Another Eye witness, Jeniffer Mulenga said it had become a norm for call boys in the District to harass girls clad in minis. Police Spokes person Elizabeth Kanjela, when contacted, said she had not yet received a report about the matter. Last month, the Copperbelt police command said it had deployed plain-clothes policemen in Kitwe and the surrounding towns to arrest street vendors and callboys who are stripping women for alleged indecent dressing.
Copperbelt police commissioner Mary Tembo said anyone arrested over the harassment of women would face the wrath of the law. That's why I am in the office at this time at the weekend monitoring the situation in Kitwe. There is no law that allows women to be stripped. This is a moral issue and if a woman is not properly dressed, she should just be advised over it," The Post quoted her as saying.
Tembo said the police were investigating the matter and those who introduced the system of stripping women alleged to be indecently dressed would be arrested. From time to time, Lusaka also records incidences of call boys and street vendors harassing girls alleged to be improperly dressed. Jump to. Sections of this page. Accessibility help.
